Two years ago, Verviers, like the entire Vesdre valley, might only see the disaster that affected the entire region.
While all the people affected are recovering little by little, we must not forget what happened on July 14 and 15, 2021. This is how the city of Verviers installed a small commemorative plaque at the edge of Vesdre, in the Fischer courtyard. Thus remembering the six Verviétois who lost their lives and the 4,693 victims who were affected to varying degrees by these terrible floods. “It’s a simple commemoration where we wanted to remember what happened two years ago nowexplains the acting mayor, Alexandre Loffet. Last year, we did something bigger, but this time we wanted to do something softer. The important thing was to still be present because when you see the photos of the people and the victims, you can see where they went and the path that they have traveled over the past two years.
A few disaster victims also made the trip, as did firefighters from the VHP zone and the Vesdre zone police. But on the side of the victims, some were unhappy with this commemoration in minor mode and wanted something more important. Because they feel they need it to turn the page. While underlining a lack of communication concerning this same commemoration of Saturday followingnoon both at the Fischer court and at Ensival in the process. “We just let it be known on our social networks that we were organizing this little commemoration, continue Alexandre Loffet. But it was just a wreath laying and not a big commemoration like last year. It was not comparable and our desire was to do something smaller.”
But this does not mean that the City is ignoring the memory of those affected and who have disappeared. “There will be in the future a more permanent monument which will be installed and which will name the victims. The place has yet to be defined.”
