Puerto Rican musician and actor Ramón “Moncho” Saldaña, who launched himself into the artistic world both on the Island and in the United States, died this followingnoon, his family confirmed in a post on social media.
In a joint statement, his sons Álvaro, Diego and Ramón Emilio confirmed their father’s death “following a short illness.”
“Father, partner, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and loved by all. He devoted himself to music and acting. He lived a full life, together with his family and his friends, ”read the message.
According to the National Foundation for Popular Culture, Saldaña was born on June 2 in the municipality of Humacao. Since he was 16 years old, the artist ventured into the world of music when he sang with a friend who accompanied him on percussion.
After this new adventure, the man from Humacao continued to sing in English and Spanish in different parts of the country with the groups San José and Los Tropicales at the Holiday Inn hotel, and later with Mickey Juarbe’s group at the Hunca Munca at the Hotel San Juan. However, at the end of this journey, he moved to the United States, where he began to sing on the East Coast and the Midwest, where he began to gain a following.
While he was fulfilling his professional commitments, he recommended him to sing at the Dionisios Club Restaurant, which distinguished itself because it was frequented by personalities such as Jacqueline Onnasis, Liza Minelli and other Hollywood figures. In said restaurant, Saldaña sang for two consecutive summers.
Later he continued to perform in the Bahamas, St. Croix, St. Thomas and Miami, where he came into contact with people from different cultures. Shortly following completing her presentations in the Caribbean, she returned to New York City where she fulfilled a six-week contract at the Arab club El Ibis.
After his return to Puerto Rico, Saldaña sang at the Tasca de Hugo in Old San Juan, but before that he participated in the Second Song and Voice Festival. In his performances, he used to vocalize songs from yesterday as well as modern compositions. In this way, in 1980, the Alambra label released a single album with the jíbara guaracha “¡Qué bella es mi tierra!” and the dance “Sunrise”.
Despite her artistic commitments, Saldaña graduated from the University of Puerto Rico School of Humanities with a minor in English and arts. Upon graduating from the institution, he dedicated himself for a time to teaching mathematics and physical education in an elementary school, however, he continued to travel to New York to strengthen his musical skills, following enrolling in piano and singing courses.
Later, she completed post-graduate studies at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, while continuing her individual and choral vocal training.
As an actor, the Puerto Rican worked in melodramas such as “General Hospital”, “Tormento” (WAPA), “La Isla” (TeleOnce), “Cuando caliente el sol” and, in 2006, he participated in the telenovela “Dueña y señora” (Dueña y señora) ( Telemundo).
On the other hand, he has participated in the filming of commercials for companies such as “Fresh Milk”, “Black Jack”, “Budweiser”, “Walgreens”, “Poncebank”, “McDonalds”, “Movistar” and “Suzuki”.
He also acted in films for television, where his performances can be appreciated in productions such as “Hemmingway”, “Composed and without boyfriend”, “Autopsy”, “The Dream Team”, “Sunstorm”, “Los Seijo Díaz” and “My house .com”.
The cinema has been another of the media in which Ramón has made himself known. For the seventh art he worked on projects such as the movie “Brenda Starr”, “Show of Force”, “Amistad”, “Under Suspicion” and “El sueño del regreso”.
The Saldaña family announced that they will soon announce when the artist’s funeral services will be held.
