The Beaucairoise, elected most beautiful woman in France on December 31, 1970, tells of her friendship with the one who has embodied the Miss France contest for so many years.

It was a phone call from Xavier de Fontenay, this Wednesday morning, who informed Myriam Scotto of the death of her “friend” Geneviève. “He told me, that’s it, she’s gone. It’s an immense sorrow. With her, it’s a part of my life that is also going away”, breathes the Beaucairoise, elected Miss France in 1971 .

The year spent together on the roads of France had created links. “She had been proud of me, she said that I had represented France perfectly”, recalls Myriam Scotto. To the point that, a few years later, Geneviève de Fontenay had agreed to be a witness to his marriage. “I was just looking at the photos this morning.”

“We called each other once a week”

Over the years, the two women have become very close. Geneviève regularly invited Myriam to the Miss France jury, before asking her to be her ambassador on the Miss Languedoc committee. “I mightn’t refuse”. This companionship turned into a strong friendship. “We called each other at least once a week. She knew she might even call at midnight. We thus went through moments of happiness, pleasure… difficulties too”.

From the one who embodied Miss France for so long, Myriam Scotto wants above all to remember, “the woman that few people knew. Behind the hat and the outbursts of voices, there was above all a generous soul, who remained simple, who did not forget little people. If she was so popular, it was also because she carried this humanity and a strong charisma. People were often more fascinated by Geneviève than by the miss she was accompanying”.
