Küsnacht/Berlin (MH) – The American tenor Stephen Gould is dead. “It is with great regret that we have to announce that Kammersänger Stephen Gould passed away yesterday,” his artist agency announced on Wednesday. “We are stunned and in deep sadness.” At the end of August, the singer (born in 1962) announced his retirement from the stage. Just two weeks ago he announced that he had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer with complications. “There is no cure for this,” he added.
The heldentenor from the US state of Virginia was one of the world’s most important Wagner singers of our time. He made regular guest appearances at the opera houses in Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, London, Paris, Vienna and Zurich. In 2015 he was awarded the title of “Austrian Kammersänger”.
“Stephen Gould was a singer who was familiar with the Vienna State Opera in every sense of the word: just as the audience loved him, so did he appreciate the house, which he once referred to in conversation as home,” explained State Opera Director Bogdan Roščić. Since his house debut in 2004, Gould has appeared on the State Opera stage in 105 performances. The performance of Wagner’s “Tristan and Isolde” in the evening will be dedicated to the artist.
At the Bayreuth Festival, where Gould is considered an audience favorite, he had to give up the title roles in “Tristan und Isolde” and “Tannhäuser” this year. He deliberately waited until following the end of the Richard Wagner Festival to announce the actual severity of his illness. From 2004 to 2022, the tenor might be seen in almost 100 performances on the Green Hill. “We would like to thank Stephen Gould for the many unforgettable evenings at the Bayreuth Festival, which he gave us with his unique voice and his magnificent stage presence,” it said on the festival’s website.
