Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot says Sir Bobby Charlton’s impact on the club is too great to ignore.
Condolences continue to pour in from the football world following the sad news of Sir Charlton’s passing earlier this week.
Ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash with FC Copenhagen, Dalot appeared alongside manager Erik ten Haag at the pre-match press conference on Monday followingnoon, and brought up Sir Bobby’s legacy as a natural topic.
Dalot was asked regarding his goal compared to Sir Charlton’s goal in Saturday’s 2-1 away win at Sheffield United.
“First of all, it is a great honor. It would be an honor if Sir Bobby’s goal was linked to my goal. I was lucky enough to get to know Sir Bobby from the moment I arrived at the club. “Sir Bobby would often stay with us following the game, regardless of whether we won or lost.”
“He was always ready to say thank you and would often tell us that we needed to do a little better. “It represents the standard of the club and the standard he wanted for this club.”
“If such a legendary player has helped the club to the best titles, the best games and the best goals, I think we should follow that path. “He is definitely one of those people we should follow in his footsteps.”
England and Portugal have faced off many times in international and domestic competitions over the years. Sir Bobby Charlton also faced Portuguese legend Eusebio in the 1968 European Cup final once morest Benfica.
Asked what he knew regarding Charlton upon arriving at United, Dalot said he was keen to learn regarding his predecessor’s legacy.
“Personally, when I arrived at the club, I tried to find out a little more regarding its history.”
