He was a rap game legend in Houston, Texas. Rapper Big Pokey, founding member of the collective Screwed Up Click, has died following collapsing during a concert at the age of 45. Big Pokey, real name Milton Powell, died following collapsing violently during a performance in Beaumont, Texas late Saturday night.
A video circulating online and on social media shows “Pokey” taking the microphone in front of a crowd gathered for the occasion. He takes a breath and then suddenly falls backwards. Despite the very rapid intervention of relatives and law enforcement, the rapper did not survive this discomfort. The cause of death was not released by authorities on Monday.
News of Pokey’s death was released in a statement on his Instagram profile. His representative, who also officially confirmed the tragedy with Fox television, said the results of the autopsy had not yet reached him.

“The Hardest Pit in the Litter” is a reference to Pokey’s 1999 debut album, literally “the hardest pit bull in the litter.” A year later, he had released the album “”D-Game”, and his third album, Da Sky’s Da Limit”, was released in 2002. He also participated in the song “Sitting’Sideways” by Paul Wall and the song “June 27th” by DJ Screw.
Most recently, he released his latest album, “Sensei,” in 2021 and featured on star band Megan Thee Stallion’s “Southside Royalty Freestyle” in 2022, alongside Sauce Walka and Lil Keke.
