Puerto Rican actor and musician Ramón “Moncho” Saldaña passed away yesterday, Friday, as confirmed by his family in a post on social media.
In a joint statement, his sons Álvaro, Diego and Ramón Emilio announced their father’s death “following a short illness.”
“Father, partner, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and loved by all. He devoted himself to music and acting. He lived a full life, together with his family and his friends, ”read the message.
Saldaña stood out in the acting field in film, theater and television with projects in and outside of Puerto Rico.
The natural actor from Humacao had the opportunity to work in the soap operas “General Hospital”, “Tormento” (Wapa TV), “La Isla” (TeleOnce), “Cuando caliente el sol” and “Dueña y señora” (Telemundo) .

He acted in the films “Hemmingway”, “Composed and without boyfriend”, “Autopsy”, “The Dream Team”, “Sunstorm”, “Los Seijo Díaz”, “Brenda Starr”, “Show of Force”, “Amistad”, “Under Suspicion” and “The Dream of the Return” and “My casa.com”, among other productions.
He also dedicated himself to filming commercials for companies such as “Fresh Milk”, “Black Jack”, “Budweiser”, “Walgreens”, “Poncebank”, “McDonalds”, “Movistar” and “Suzuki”.
According to the National Foundation for Popular Culture, Saldaña was born on June 2 in the municipality of Humacao. He ventured into music at the age of 16.
He sang in English and Spanish with the groups San José and Los Tropicales at the Holiday Inn hotel, and later with Mickey Juarbe’s group at the Hunca Munca at the Hotel San Juan. She then moved to the United States. He appeared at the Dionisios Club Restaurant, which distinguished itself because it was frequented by personalities such as Jacqueline Onnasis, Liza Minelli and other Hollywood figures.
Later he continued to perform in the Bahamas, St. Croix, St. Thomas and Miami, where he came into contact with people from different cultures. Shortly following completing her presentations in the Caribbean, she returned to New York City where she fulfilled a six-week contract at the Arab club El Ibis.
After his return to Puerto Rico, Saldaña sang at the Tasca de Hugo in Old San Juan. She came to participate in the Second Song and Voice Festival.
In 2016 he presented his album “Autorretrato”. In 1980, the Alambra label released a single album with the jíbara guaracha “¡Qué bella es mi tierra!” and the dance “Sunrise”.
Saldaña graduated from the University of Puerto Rico School of Humanities with a minor in English and Arts. Upon graduating from the institution, he dedicated himself for a time to teaching mathematics and physical education in an elementary school, however, he continued to travel to New York to strengthen his musical skills, following enrolling in piano and singing courses.
He completed post-graduate studies at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, while continuing his individual and choral vocal training.
