American comedian Paul Reubens, famous for his quirky man-child character Pee-wee Herman, died aged 70 on Sunday July 30. He had been suffering from cancer for six years, according to a statement posted on the actor’s official social media accounts. “Paul battled cancer courageously and privately for years with the tenacity and spirit that characterized him”explains the press release, recalling that his character of “Pee-wee Herman, has enchanted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness.”

The actor has never publicly discussed his illness. Born in 1952 in New York State, he began his career as a comedian in Los Angeles in the 1970s. From 1980, his character Pee-wee Herman propelled him to stardom. This slender crank with a childish character and the eternal red bow tie even had his own television show in the United States, from 1986 to 1990, and a film directed by Tim Burton in 1985.

Several roles in cinema and in series

Paul Reubens also starred in feature films Batman: The Challenge by Tim Burton and Matildamade appearances in television series, such as Ally McBealand lent his voice to characters in animated films, notably in The strange Christmas of Mr. Jack et Dr. Dolittle.

His career came to a halt in 1991, following his arrest in a pornographic cinema in Florida. The actor, accused of masturbating in front of the screen and charged with exhibitionism, did not dispute the facts. This scandal plunged him into a crossing of the desert, during which he almost disappeared from the screens. After a few film roles, Paul Reubens finally took over the character of Pee-wee Herman in the 2010s, first on Broadway and then in a show produced by Netflix.
