A monument of the Quebec artistic community has just left us far too soon: Michel Côté died at the age of 72 following a long bone marrow illness.
It is with “infinite sadness” that the family of Michel Côté announced his death on Monday, “surrounded by his loved ones”.

We learned in April 2022 that the popular artist was undergoing treatment for a bone marrow disease. No other details were then given on the seriousness of the disease, but the actor announced his withdrawal from public life “for an indefinite period”, in a press release. Then last February we learned that he had undergone a bone marrow transplant.

The most gifted actor of his generation and adored by the public, the native of Almaty will forever be associated with the play Broue, performed for 38 years with his accomplices Marcel Gauthier and Marc Messier, as well as with the successful feature films Cruising Bar , CRAZY, Piché, between heaven and earth, From father to cop (1 and 2). What regarding the series La petite vie and Omertà.
Life companion of actress Véronique Le Flaguais and father of actor Maxime Le Flaguais as well as architect Charles Côté, Michel Côté shone on stage, on both the small and the big screen.
On TV, in addition to La petite vie and Omerta, we have notably been able to appreciate his talent in Poivre et sel, Montréal ville Ouvert, Les Brillant and Du tac au tac. He was also in all the Bye Bye broadcasts from 1979 to 1986.
However, it is the cinema that has spoiled him – and his audience – the most, with roles as varied as they are spectacular. Let’s think here of the four crazy characters he played in Cruising Bar in 1989 and in the 2008 sequel, his role as a police officer in From father to cop in 2009 and in the 2017 sequel as well as the feature films Le crime d’ ‘Ovide Plouffe, In the belly of the dragon, The wind of Wyoming, List black, On the threshold, The last tunnel and My daughter, my angel.
An audience favorite, Michel Côté has brought home several Gémeaux, Génie and Jutra awards during his long and prolific career.
The family said Monday that no interviews or comments will be made until details of his funeral are released. “Until then, his family and loved ones thank you for respecting their need to withdraw from public space,” we wrote.
All of Quebec is in mourning today. We console ourselves by saying that his characters will remain with us for many more years so that our collective memory will never forget the great talent of this man who knew how to make us go through a whole range of emotions. https://t.co/ms5dVHiEWE
