Remembering Marcelo Simón: A Tribute to the Voice of Argentine Popular Culture

The radio and television producer and host Marcelo Simón, recognized for his work as director of Radio Nacional Folklorica and for having been one of the main voices of the Cosquín Festival, died this Sunday at the age of 82 at the Güemes Sanatorium in the City of Buenos Aires.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Marcelo Simón, a fundamental voice in the dissemination of Argentine popular culture for decades. “We invite all of his friends to say goodbye to him at the Chacarita cemetery on September 11 at 11:15,” the family said in a brief press release.

The announcer, journalist and writer, born on November 14, 1940 in Córdoba and mentor of the classic program “Voces de la patria grande”, died this morning in the Buenos Aires hospital to which he had been admitted days ago due to a cerebrovascular accident. (ACV).

In his long and intense career, Simón won the 1997 Konex Prize in the Popular Music area and obtained a dozen Martín Fierro awards.

Owner of a personal style that is both folksy and didactic to address issues of popular culture, he also directed the magazine “Folklore” and the radio stations Excelsior, El Mundo and Libertad.

Author of books such as Adiós Neruda and Detrás de la muerte, eight years ago he was honored at the Argentores headquarters in recognition of his career.

Part of that tribute were his colleague Alicia Petti, his partner the singer Susanna Moncayo with her son Juanito and figures such as Juan Carlos Saravia, Víctor Heredia, Jaime Torres, Ramón Navarro, Sara Mamani, Osvaldo Papaleo, Andrés Percivale, Piero, Alejandro Dolina, Melania Pérez, José Curbelo, Ramón Ayala, Mariana Carrizo and Luis Landriscina.
