He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1952. His school years included a one-year delay when he successfully battled through a bout of polio. Jerome enlisted in the US Navy in 1953 and completed training to be a radioman in Norfolk Virginia. He was assigned to the USS Warrington Destroyer in the US Navy. He travelled the world and worked as telegraph operator. He remembered his Morse code training up to the time of his passing and enjoyed sharing this skill with his grandkids.

After being discharged from the Navy, Jerome returned to his family farm in the Ypsilanti area of Stutsman County. He met the love his life, Margaret (Guthmiller) at a 4H event and they were married on June 30th, 1962. They had 2 children, Kevin and Rodney, and continued to farm until 1980 when they moved to the city of Jamestown. Jerome held several office jobs and they moved to Oakes in 1985 and then returned to Jamestown in 1996 when he semi-retired.

Jerome enjoyed music and was a self-taught piano player after having accordion lessons in his younger years. He sang with the Jamestown Choralaires and in the St John’s Lutheran church choir. He enjoyed gardening with Margaret and attending all of his grand kid’s events. Jerome’s sweet tooth was widely known, and he never turned down anything with chocolate. He was also an avid Sudoku puzzle solver, and these books were always on his shopping list in his later years.
