“Honorary senator Jeannine Leduc, who co-wrote the law on euthanasia, died peacefully today,” he wrote.
“Thank you for everything you have done for our party, but more importantly, for the Belgian people. I hope you find the peace that you gave to so many people. You were an example to us all,” said added Mr. Ongena.
Ms. Leduc was born on June 5, 1939 in Gossoncourt (Tirlemont, Flemish Brabant). She was a directly elected senator from 1995 to 2007 and was notably at the origin of the law of May 28, 2002 decriminalizing euthanasia in certain situations – a first in the world at the time. This law has since been amended several times.
