Ahmad Jamal, the legendary pianist and composer, died on Sunday April 16 at his home in Massachusetts, USA; he was 92 years old. He had inspired the greatest, like trumpeter Miles Davis and Keith Jarret. Multi-awarded, he was crowned with a Grammy Award for his entire career in 2017. He remains a great jazz legend.

Robert Peyrillou, president of Souillac en Jazz, remembers his visit to Souillac in 1997 for the 22nd festival; a magical moment engraved in the memory of spectators, volunteers and partners: it is July 18, 1997, the Souillac convention center is getting ready, Ahmad Jamal is on stage, there is Othello Molineaux, steel drum player, James Cammack , on double bass, and Idriss Muhammad, on drums. Robert Peyrillou remembers: “Ahmad comes down from the stage around 5 p.m., following testing the piano for a few minutes and says to me: I want this piano next week on the 23rd in the Pernes-les-Fontaines studio in the Vaucluse to record Nature. I am looking for Jean-Yves Vivini, our renter and piano tuner, who immediately accepts and his name will appear on the cover of the disc in May 98.

Ahmad Jamal’s visit to Souillac remains one of the greatest events in 46 years of the festival. His memory was recalled a few days ago in the same convention center when the trio of the Tradescantia project, played on March 19, interpreted Poinciana, the key theme of the great pianist. Thank you Mr Jamal.
