Since the collapse of her marriage to the British composer John Barry in the late 1960s she lived in France, her adopted country.

Birkin is best known internationally for her 1969 hit, which featured her alongside her lover, the late French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, who sang the sexually explicit “Je t’aime…moi non plus”. The song was banned in many countries, but it made the seductive woman with the gap in her teeth and the English accent a star overnight in 1969 – and the two became a couple. Their daughter Charlotte was born two years later. Daughter Lou’s father is the French film director and screenwriter Jacques Doillon.

In 2013, Birkin suffered a severe stroke of fate. She lost her daughter Kate from the relationship with the composer Barry. The then 46-year-old photographer had thrown herself out of the window of her Paris apartment on the fourth floor. In recent years, Birkin has struggled with health problems. Besides music, Birkin has made more than 70 films.
