The academic community of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is in mourning following the death of Ileana Yamileth Bautista Muñoz, a first-grade student studying Medical Surgeon.

The death of the young woman, which occurred on January 12, shocked colleagues and teachers at the Faculty of Medicine, who have expressed themselves via social networks. Bautista Muñoz’s cause of death was not disclosed at first, but the impact of her death has been latent on social networks.

It was last Monday, January 15, when the UNAM Faculty of Medicine issued a brief statement deeply regretting the loss of the young member of The Maximum House of Studies, who had only joined the institution in August 2023.

“The Faculty of Medicine regrets the sensitive death of our beloved student Ileana Yamileth Bautista Muñoz and joins in the grief that family, friends and colleagues feel. May he rest in peace,” the official message mentioned.

The death of the young student who had just entered the first year of the Surgeon’s Degree received some comments on the X account where the event was reported. Tributes and memories from peers and teachers emerged, highlighting the student’s human qualities and commitment to her studies.

“I hardly saw you because you were always studying, but even so it was inevitable to get attached to you. I will never forget you and you will live in my heart, Ile. Your roommate will love you forever”, “Our condolences to the family with a supportive hug to accompany the mourning, an excellent student, person and human who honored me by allowing me to be her teacher. Wherever it is I know it will shine with immense light”, “Fly high Ileana and continue evolving on another plane where death does not exist”

The students of the Faculty of Medicine, who had barely resumed classes following their specific school calendar following a brief break in the last weeks of 2023 and early 2024, are now facing shock and sadness at the unexpected news.

Through the faculty’s Facebook account, where the death was also announced, more than 100 people have shared messages of mourning and support for the family of Bautista Muñoz, as well as anecdotes and expressions of affection towards the student who aspired to be a doctor.

“The one who writes this message is a mother with a broken heart and soul. This is to thank the entire UNA community; On behalf of our family, the support and solidarity for the loss of our beloved daughter. Thank her friends who accompanied us. Our princess lost her life due to an instantaneous brain aneurysm on Friday, January 12, 2024 at the age of 18. But it fills our soul to see the displays of affection and love that all of you, kids of the UNAM community, left us, as well as the dear teachers, their cheers and applause.”

“My little daughter now from heaven was immensely happy, since her dream was to enter the honorable faculty of the UNAM and she left happy. Thank you all so much,” reads the message to which more than 200 people have reacted.
