Hyderabad: Revolutionary folk singer and poet Gaddar (Gummadi Vittal Rao-74) passed away. He died while undergoing treatment at Apollo Spectrum Hospital, Hyderabad. He underwent a heart surgery two days ago and his condition became serious as he developed some respiratory problems.
Gaddar was born in 1949 in a Dalit family in Tupran, a hamlet near Hyderabad, where he completed his schooling. Later he joined engineering in Hyderabad but dropped out midway. Later he joined a bank but got attracted to the Naxal movement and formed an organization called Jananatya Mandali.
He was in hiding for several years, and later became estranged from the Naxal movement. After coming out, he toured the districts and villages of undivided Andhra Pradesh with his revolutionary folk songs. He sang and acted in the movie ‘Maa Bhumi’.
In 1997, he was assassinated at his home. Out of the four bullets that pierced his body that day, one bullet remained in his body until he died.
Wife: Vimala. Children: Late Chandra, Surya and Vennila.
Gaddar’s mortal remains were taken to the Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad and later placed for public viewing at his residence in Bhudevinagar and the Mahabodhi Vidyalaya he started. The funeral is on Monday.
Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, P.C.C. President Revanth Reddy, Union Minister and B.J.P. State President Kishan Reddy and other leaders paid tributes to Gaddar.
