The actor, nominated for a César for Best Supporting Role in 1994 for Germinal by Claude Berri, died at the age of 66.
“I had never met an actor like him.” It is with these words that the actress Cécile Bois announced on Instagram the death of French actor Jean-Roger Milo on Sunday at the age of 66.
The latter starred opposite the actor in Germinal by Claude Berri, a film which earned Jean-Roger Milo a nomination for the Césear for Best Supporting Role in 1994 for his character Antoine Chaval.
“After Germinal, I discovered the man. I had never met a man like him. (…) His life path knew no rules. He left yesterday and more than usual, I tell myself that if this soul works to watch over the world, then we will be saved,” writes Cécile Bois in her tribute on Instagram.
“Be at peace, you who did not rest. A thought of your son and your daughter. And of those who loved you. Never once more will I meet a man like you,” she continues.
“For me, cinema was over”
Born in 1957 in Paris, Jean-Roger Milo began his acting career by making appearances in the films La Tortue sur le dos by Luc Béraud (1978), La Clé sur la porte by Yves Boisset (1978), Rosy la Bourrasque by Mario Monicelli (1979) or La Bande du Rex by Jean-Henri Meunier (1980).
Thanks to his “face” and his corpulent physique, the actor became known in the cinema at the beginning of the 80s where he multiplied the roles of nasty and brutal characters, notably in A Cop’s Sunday (1981) by Michel Vianey alongside Victor Lanoux and Jean Rochefort, Tir grouped (1982) by Jean-Claude Missiaen with Gérard Lanvin and Véronique Jannot or L’As des As (1982) by Gérard Oury with Jean-Paul Belmondo.
But as he prepares to play one of the main roles in Rue Barbare by Gilles Béhat, Jean-Roger Milo receives a blow with an iron bar in a fight, following having protected a child. In a coma for eight hours, the actor remained hospitalized for several months, which brought his career to a sudden halt.
Replaced at the last minute by Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu, the actor was the victim of a bad reputation in the cinema industry for several years for having caused the film to lose a lot of money. “I was outside, for me cinema was over,” he said in 1997 in Release.
Fortunately, director Bertrand Tavernier offered Jean-Roger Milo a revival of popularity by giving him a small role in Life and Nothing Else in 1989, then the character of Manu, in the thriller L.627 in 1992.
The filmmaker Claude Berri will also give him a chance by asking him to play the tailor Maurice in Lucie Aubrac (1997) then to play Antoine Chaval in Germinal, the adaptation of Emile Zola’s classic, in 1993, alongside Gérard Depardieu , Miou-Miou, Jean Carmet or even the singer Renaud.
Jean-Roger Milo has also distinguished himself in many popular French cinema films such as Le Pari by Didier Bourdon and Bernard Campan or Asterix et Obélix contre César by Claude Zidi in which he plays the blacksmith Cétautomatix.
The actor will subsequently gradually end his career in cinema. His last appearance on screen dates from 2004 in the film San Antonio by Frédéric Auburtin with Gérard Lanvin and Gérard Depardieu.
