The historian Frédéric Bastien, who was notably a candidate for the leadership of the Parti Québécois (PQ), died at the age of 53. The announcement was made on his Facebook page on Tuesday evening by one of his collaborators and friends.
The Journal of Montreal, where he kept a column, indicated that his death was confirmed in the evening by his spouse, Marie-Ève Lépine. The couple have three children, aged 11, 13 and 15.
Frédéric Bastien was, among other things, a history professor at Dawson College. Holder of a doctorate in history and international politics from the Graduate Institute of International Studies, he was the author of several books, including The Battle of Londonwho received the Richard-Arès prize in 2013.
Mr. Bastien finished fourth in the 2020 PQ leadership race, which pitted him once morest Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, Sylvain Gaudreault and Guy Nantel. His former adversaries also reacted quickly to the announcement of his death.
