Remembering Former Minister M.A. Kuttappan: A Tribute to a Visionary Leader

Former minister and Congress leader M.A. Kuttappan (75) passed away in Kochi. In 2001, Antony was the Minister of Backward and Scheduled Caste Welfare. Born on April 12, 1947 to Ilavunkal Ayyappan and Kalyani in Mallappalali Valakuzhi, Pathanamthitta district, Kuttappan is an MBBS graduate. He has served as KPCC General Secretary, Executive Committee Member, Congress (I) Scheduled Caste/Varga Cell State Chairman, Calicut University Senate Member, Khadi and Village Industries Commission. Kuttappan joined the Congress in 1978, entering politics through the Congress Parivantavadi statement. In 1980, he represented Vantur, in 1987, in Chelakkara, and in 1996 and 2001, he became a member of the Legislative Assembly. After suffering a stroke in 2016, he retired from public life.

Kuttappan, who worked in Alappuzha Medical College Hospital, Health Department and Cochin Port Trust Hospital, resigned from his post for political work. Although a Pathanamthitta by birth, Dr. MA Kuttappan became a Kochi native by deed. Kuttappan got attracted to mainstream politics when he was serving as house surgeon at Ernakulam General Hospital from Kottayam Medical College.
