Actor Elmar Wepper dies at the age of 79

Television star Elmar Wepper is dead. The Munich native died unexpectedly of sudden heart failure. He reached an audience of millions with his films and series.

One of Wepper’s greatest successes is the ZDF series “Two Münchner in Hamburg”, for which he appeared in front of the camera alongside Uschi Glas from the late 1980s.

The actor Elmar Wepper is dead. This was confirmed by his agent at the German Press Agency on Tuesday. As “Bild” reported, citing friends and family, the 79-year-old died of heart failure in Munich on Tuesday morning. It was said that he suddenly fell over. “We are incredibly sad!” said his agent to dpa.

One of Wepper’s greatest successes is the ZDF series “Two Münchner in Hamburg”, for which he appeared in front of the camera alongside Uschi Glas from the late 1980s. In 2008, director Doris Dörrie hired him for her highly acclaimed film “Cherry Blossoms – Hanami”, and there was a sequel in 2018.

“I’m stunned” – Uschi Glas mourns

Wepper’s colleague Uschi Glas told “Bild” on Tuesday: “I am stunned. I’m at a loss for words and am deeply sad and shocked.” Elmar was one of her most important colleagues and also “a true friend”. She had the most days of filming together with Elmar in her career. Her thoughts are with Wepper’s family.

Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth said his death touched her very much. “With him, Germany is losing an outstanding actor and a sensitive person who was honored not only for his acting but also for his social commitment. Elmar Wepper shaped German film for more than half a century.”

Wepper leaves behind his wife and son

Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) described the actor as a “Bavarian all-rounder” who moved people’s hearts. Wepper is “someone who has always managed to embody our homeland in film and television in a genuine and unpretentious manner.”

Elmar Wepper came to television in 1974 through his older brother Fritz, namely on the ZDF crime series “The Commissioner”. From then on he was regularly in front of the camera. Every now and then the brothers also filmed together – for example in the comedy “Three in One Blanket”. Wepper lived with his wife near Munich. There is a son and two grandchildren.
