Thiruvananthapuram∙ ‘When you’re suffocated and confused,
Five year old Anna will ask;
Is dad missing now, can we talk?
Can you laugh or tilt your head?
All she needs to know is that Appa is in no danger
It’s not stuck.’
When he wrote this poem regarding his daughter Annapurna, he was an assistant surgeon in the health department and a writer. C. Pinto was on his way to death. Pinto may have known then how long he had to live, suffering from a disease called microneuron disease, which affects the limbs and brain.
Annapurna was 5 years old when Pinto died on July 5, 2005 at the age of 35. Pinto’s 18th death anniversary was observed yesterday. Annapurna will receive her MBBS degree from Kottayam Medical College today.
Pinto was diagnosed with microneuron disease before Anna was a year old. Annapurna grew up watching Pinto being cared for by his wife Dr. Betsy Mani. Annapurna took on some of that care at an early age. Later decided to make patient care a part of life. Annapurna’s sister Anasuya Pinto is a 3rd year MBBS student at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
The Pinto Memorial Lecture, which is organized every year by Pinto’s friends, was held in Thiruvananthapuram yesterday. Dr. Betsy also delivered the Pinto Memorial Lecture yesterday. Dr. Lekha Chakraborty delivered a lecture on ‘Place of Women in Indian Budget’. V. Joy MLA, Pinto Lecture Convenors Dr. Vidyadhara Prasad Gupta and SP Deepak spoke.
