His work and commitment to medical education in Puerto Rico make him an emblematic figure for the country’s medical community.

Recently, the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico reported that it will carry out a tribute posthumous award to Dr. Ángel A. Román Franco, for his legacy and extensive contribution to the field of medicine from Puerto Rico.
The commemorative event, organized by the students of the Pathology Interest Group, will take place on Thursday, May 25, at 6 pm, in Amphitheater 1 of the School of Medicine from the University of Puerto Rico.
Dr. Román Franco was a renowned pathologist and professor at the Medical Sciences Campus, being a leader in the following fields: immunopathology, cancer research and prevention, industrial toxicology, medicine occupational, forensic pathology, medicine military, the medicine evolutionary and medical humanities.
As an academic leader, he was Department Director, Dean of Medicine and Rector of the Medical Sciences Campus. Therefore, his outstanding medical record and contribution to graduate education earned him the rank of Distinguished Professor of the School of Medicine from the University of Puerto Rico.
“Through this great, beautiful and necessary initiative, we celebrate and give meaning to the legacy of Dr. Ángel Román Franco. Unquestionably, Dr. Román Franco left a mark on each one of us, due to his intellectual depth, warmth, simplicity and quality human being,” said Professor Carlos Ortiz, interim rector of the Medical Sciences Campus.
“Throughout his career, the doctor dedicated his life and professed his love for the UPR, the Medical Sciences Campus and the School of Medicine. Doctor Román Franco is part of the historical and collective memory of our institution,” he added.
For his part, Dr. Humberto M. Guiot, Acting Dean of the School of Medicine of the UPR said that “we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Ángel Román Franco and appreciate his relevant deed. His contributions to excellence in education, research, and service at our campus are recognized by the students, faculty, and administration of the UPR school. Medicine“.
“Dr. Román Franco was an exceptional and generous human being, and a doctor committed to his patients, his family and his beloved School. Without a doubt, Dr. Román Franco left a great legacy to his country. His work and teachings will transcend throughout of whom we were his disciples, colleagues and friends”, he added.
According to Mr. José Forty Díaz, a fourth-year student at Medicine and Chairman of the Pathology Interest Group, “Dr. Román Franco has left his mark on countless physicians, students, and other professionals in the health through his career. He was an exemplary doctor, with an exceptional ability to combine the sciences and the arts, understanding that the best learning is achieved through the enrichment of all branches of knowledge. In addition, he always practiced his teachings with deep kindness, empathy, and altruism. Without a doubt, he left an outstanding legacy for all of us, being a role model, as a doctor, and as a human being.”
