the essential Son of the inventor of the progressive lens, Alain Grandperret settled in Lot-et-Garonne in the 1980s. A great ophthalmologist recognized by his peers, he died at the age of 81.
Doctor Alain Grandperret has just left us. For many years he was a personality in Fumélois not only as a renowned doctor but also through his commitment to serving the community. Born in 1940, in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés in the Paris suburbs, he is the grandson of the founder of the Essilor company, the largest optical lens manufacturer in the world at the time. René Grandperret, his father, would later be its CEO and is the inventor of the progressive lens.
Alain Grandperret began his professional career as an optician in Paris. During one of his interventions in a hospital, he was sharply reprimanded by a particularly authoritarian female doctor. He doesn’t like it, decides to return to his medical studies late in life and becomes an intern at the Quinze-Vingt Hospital. There, a professor urged him to take a position as head of clinic at Rangueil in Toulouse. He had what it took to become a Professor of Medicine but his strong character led him to want to be his own “boss”.
A pioneer in eye surgery
Thus, in 1986 he created his office in Fumel, not by chance, but because he knew the region well having come there many times on vacation with his parents. In addition he owned a house near Bonaguil.
Doctor El Harouchy became his partner in 1988. He confided to us with emotion: “He was a particularly competent professional: he was one of the first in France to install crystalline implants for cataract surgery. He was my role model and I was his student in the field of eye surgery. He was very disappointed by the financialization of health in general and wanted to leave the Agen clinic to peacefully end his career. This is why, in 2000, I was particularly happy to welcome him to the Ophthalmology Center that I had created myself. He was a kind man who brought me a lot, on a human level, in the compassionate relationship he had with his patients.”
Alain Grandperret was also a municipal councilor of Fumel, in charge of finances from 2008 to 2014, under the 2nd mandate of Jean-Louis Costes, who pays tribute to him: “As everyone knows, he was a professional known and recognized both in France and in outside our borders. Some of his patients came from abroad. He helped give Fumel a particularly positive image.”
