Remembering Charles Cyphers: Celebrated Actor of ‘Halloween’ Fame Passes Away at 84

Actor Charles Cyphers passed away last Sunday, August 4, after suffering from “a brief illness,” his representative Chris Roe confirmed to the specialized outlet Variety. “Charles was a lovely and sensitive man,” Roe said in a statement.

Cyphers first portrayed Sheriff Brackett in John Carpenter’s 1978 horror film “Halloween,” which starred Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie in her film debut. He reprised his role in the 1981 sequel “Halloween II” and in “Halloween Kills” in 2021.

The actor began his career precisely with Carpenter in the 1976 action film “Assault on Precinct 13,” where he worked alongside Ethan Hawke, Laurence Fishburne, and Gabriel Byrne. Cyphers was born on July 28, 1939, in Niagara Falls, New York, and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Cal State LA, where he received his bachelor’s degree in theater arts.

Cyphers appeared as a supporting actor in multiple television series throughout his career, including “Barnaby Jones,” “The Bionic Woman,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “Roots,” and “Starsky and Hutch.”
