Cardinal Toppo was born in 1939 in Jaipur, present-day Jharkhand, India. Archdiocese of Ranchi’s Auxiliary Bishop Maskareniyas said in his obituary that Cardinal Topo was “bedridden” for a long time. In his obituary, the bishop mentioned that Catholics in the Archdiocese of Ranchi expressed their gratitude to the late cardinal for his “immense contribution to the development of the Church in Jodha Nagpur.”
Cardinal Tobo was elevated to the rank of Cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2003. He is the first cardinal from a northern Indian mission and the first indigenous Indian cardinal. He studied at the Pontifical University Urbano in Rome.
Cardinal Toppo was a polyglot and a witness to some important events in the Indian Church. For example, during his tenure as Archbishop of Ranchi, Pope John Paul II visited Ranchi in 1986 and Mother Teresa of Calcutta visited Ranchi in 1994. Cardinal Tobo attended the Synods of Bishops held in 1990, 2001 and 2005, as well as the Extraordinary Synod of Asian Bishops in 1998 and the Extraordinary Synod of European Bishops in 1999.
In addition, Cardinal Tobo was the presidential representative of the 11th Ordinary Session of the Synod of Bishops in 2005, and a member of the Cardinal Commission for the Study of Organizational and Economic Issues of the Holy See.
