Bolivian General Gary Prado Salmon, who captured the Argentine revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara in 1967, died on May 6 at the age of 84. This was announced by his son Gary Prado Arauz.
“He died surrounded by his wife and children,” he wrote on Facebook (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned; quoted by AFP).
Gary Prado Salmon commanded a battalion of rangers, who on October 8, 1967 defeated a partisan detachment and captured 39-year-old Ernesto Guevara. A day later, he was executed by the Bolivian military. The Bolivian Congress declared the general a national hero for his role in capturing Che.
Gary Prado Salmon was left paralyzed following being accidentally shot in the spine in 1981. He left the army in 1988. Since mid-April 2023, the retired general has experienced health complications.
Argentine-born Ernesto Guevara, commander of the 1959 Cuban Revolution, was also a Cuban statesman.
