The Gotthard road tunnel, opened in 1980, will be completely renovated in just over six years. During the works, traffic will pass through the second tube which is currently under construction.

43 years old and 17 kilometers long, the tunnel needs to be cleaned up. In 2016, the Swiss people approved the construction of a second tube and the renovation of the existing tunnel.

Preparatory work for the second tube began in spring 2020. Costs are estimated at 2.14 billion francs (2.23 billion euros). The tunnel boring machines should come into action in 2024. Drilling should be completed in 2026.

Both tunnels are expected to be operational from 2032, with only one lane of traffic in each direction. The second lane of each tube will serve as an emergency lane.
