“Remco Evenepoel’s 2021 Cycling Season: A Look at One-Day Races and Small Stage Races”

Remco Evenepoel is no longer positive for Covid since Thursday. This was revealed Patrick Lefevere to our colleagues from Sporza and the Nieuwsblad.

After having swept away the hypothesis of Evenepoel’s participation in the Tour de France on our microphone, the boss of the Soudal – Quick Step team was also very skeptical regarding his colt’s participation in the Vuelta at the end of the season. “The Tour is not on the program, neither is the Vuelta“, he decided at the microphone of Sporza while Evenepoel’s program for the rest of the season has – quite logically – not yet been determined.

But if no Grand Tour is on the horizon, several meetings still seem to be already planned on the world champion’s calendar. The first objective for its recovery will be to prepare for the Belgian championships once morest the clock (June 22) and online (June 25).

To approach this Belgian meeting, Evenepoel might compete in one or more one-day races, “but we’ll see next week how to do it“, Patrick Lefevere told Het Nieuwsblad. The Critérium du Dauphiné was “an option” but will arrive too soon (June 4 to 11).

The rest of the program remains uncertain but one thing is certain, Evenepoel will do everything to present himself in his best form at the Glasgow World Championships (August 6), which he will undoubtedly prepare by participating in the Clasica San Sebastian (July 27 ). “He wants to defend his title acquired last year, in these circumstances it would be hard to carry out a new training block for the Vuelta (26/08 to 17/09)“, said Lefevere once more who believes that “Remco has already won the Tour of Spain and no one would expect a different result from that if they were to participate”.

It is therefore on one-day races and small stage races that Evenepoel should concentrate for the rest of the season. Participation in the Tour of Britain (from September 3 to 10) or Canadian races (Quebec GP on September 8 and the Montreal GP on September 10) are among the options available.

We might then see Evenepoel on the roads of the Italian semi-classics (Bernocchi, 3 varesines valleys, Tour of Emilia, etc.) often surveyed to prepare for the Tour of Lombardy (October 7), the last major objective of his season.
