In a few months, Remco Evenepoel will compete in the Tour de France for the first time in his career. Although he will only resume racing on February 10 during the Figueira Champions Classic in Portugal, the time trial world champion is not idle and is preparing for this new season. This year once more, the individual exercise will be very important for him and his team.
To prepare, the winner of the 2022 Vuelta went to Milan this Monday with some of the staff to practice in a wind tunnel. The objective? Test different positions, suits, shoes and helmets so that the rider can improve further.
Koen Pelgrim, coach of Soudal Quick-Step, explained the approach. “These different experiments actually focused on the equipment worn by the world champion during these individual efforts. The data we gain from this time spent in the wind tunnel is invaluable. During qualifying, the fine margins can make a huge difference. In the controlled environment of the wind tunnel, we can see the differences different materials will make, while seeing how they will interact with different positions on the bike. Remco is in a great position and Castelli is already producing a great time trial combination. Rather than looking to make big changes, we’re trying to refine the setup we have.”
For Alvin Nordell, head of the racing division at Castelli, Evenepoel represents a “unique challenge”. “His position is so compact and aerodynamic that most of the solutions that work for other riders don’t work with him. We are at the level where the best need personalized solutions. Fortunately, Remco has always recognized the importance of this work and devotes a lot of time to testing and improvement. Together, we will continue to make it faster and faster,” he explains.
Either way, Evenepoel will count on these kinds of exercises to shine in the 59 individual kilometers of the next Tour de France which they might use to gain time on their rivals.
