This decline, the report says, is explained by the 40% decrease in major arms imports by African states. Indeed, this fall was spread over the periods of 2013-2017 and 2018-2022. The main suppliers to Africa over the past four years were Russia, which accounted for 40% of African arms imports, the United States (16%), China (9.8%) and France (7. 6%), details the report.
With a share of arms imports of 0.8% between 2018 and 2022, compared to 1.1% for the period 2013-2017, Morocco ranks 29th among the top 40 major arms importers. Between the two periods, there was a variation of -30% in percentage. With a market share of 76%, the United States remained Morocco’s leading arms supplier, followed by France (15%) and China (6.8%).
On the other hand, Algeria is ranked 18th with a share of world arms imports of 1.8% between 2018 and 2022, compared to 4.1% for the period between 2013 and 2017 (-58%). Weapons are mainly imported from France (5.2%), Germany (10%) and Russia (73%).
According to the same source, Russia accounted for 40% of Africa’s top arms imports between 2018 and 2022, followed by the United States (16%), China (9%) and France (7%).
India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Australia and China were the top five arms importers from 2018 to 2022. With a share of global arms imports that reached 4.5%, the Egypt ranks first in Africa and ranks sixth in the world.
