Relocation program in Brazil benefited 100,000 Venezuelans in 5 years

The figure constitutes almost a quarter of Venezuelans living in Brazil, according to figures from its Ministry of Social Development.

The voluntary relocation program for Venezuelan refugees and migrants from the Brazilian state of Roraima (on the border with Venezuela) to other cities in Brazil has benefited more than 100,000 people since its launch five years ago, the UN Refugee Agency highlighted today. (UNHCR).

The figure constitutes almost a quarter of Venezuelans living in Brazil, according to figures from its Ministry of Social Development.

The 100,000 Venezuelan refugees and migrants (80% of them women and children) have been relocated to more than 930 cities across the country; “In order to have better opportunities to improve their quality of life, contribute more and achieve autonomy and integration,” UNHCR highlighted.

A survey carried out in 2021 indicated that eight out of 10 adults benefiting from the program, called “internalization”, had already found employment or started their own businesses.

The program is supported by the monitoring platform for Venezuelan migrants and refugees R4V, coordinated by UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
