AIt is common for houses and institutions to be moved from one place to another when there are facilities or inadequacies. But have you ever heard of an entire city being relocated from one location to another. If not, one Swedish city is preparing for such a relocation. The name of this city is ‘Kiruna’ which had a population of over 17,000 in 2016. The authorities are currently in the process of relocating the beautiful town of Kiruna, in the northern region of Swedish Lapland, completely away from its current location. This relocation is not just. There is a strong reason behind it. Such a decision was made by the rulers following some unique discoveries were made in this city.

Earlier this year, the city reported the discovery of precious minerals, including deposits of rare earth elements. The most important of these is iron ore. Other elements were also found 1365 meters below ground level. State-owned mining company LKAB said the deposit was discovered next to an iron ore mine in Kiruna and contained more than 1 million tonnes of rare earth oxides. The company claimed that there are enough deposits here to supply a ‘significant part of Europe’s needs’ and that it will not have to rely on China for the mineral in the future. Newly discovered cobalt deposits will play a crucial role in the production of electric car batteries and wind turbines, according to reports. This discovery was no small relief to the rulers. Because the country was going through a big economic crisis for the last 18 months. Therefore, with the confirmation of such a discovery, Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Bush described her country as a ‘gold mine’.

But when mining for these minerals started in Kiruna, it became a big challenge for the locals. It deformed the terrain and cracked buildings etc. As a result, a project is now underway to move the Kiruna to its original location regarding 1.9 miles east. Officials say that the relocation process will be completed in 2026. Those leading the relocation project say that historic landmarks like the church, which was established in 1912, will be preserved intact. The locals are waiting for those crucial moments.
