This long-awaited regularization is also a great reward for all the people who have mobilized, during one-off actions, or over the long term within the support committee.
“We would be delighted if all these people knew that we must continue to fight because it serves a purpose, explains Steven Lemaire, member of the committee. For a family of undocumented immigrants arriving in Belgium, without the help and support that the Yusufi family has had, it is practically impossible. There, there is really something to do at the level of the State, it is necessary to be able to facilitate these requests for asylum. Here, one wonders why this case lasted so long. Seven years is a long time to finally receive human rights and not be afraid to take the train to go somewhere, to be apprehended by the police, to risk ending up in a closed center far from your family. These are all fears that the family can finally put aside.”
The papers issued to the Yusufi family are valid for a year and a half, but they can be renewed. In the immediate future, Abdul Yusufi, a Red Cross volunteer, and his wife Khadija will be able to look for work. As for the children, they will be able to continue their schooling or their studies with complete peace of mind.
