PUNTA DEL ESTE.- The department of Maldonado began a relentless search for a 17-year-old girl, who left his house on Tuesday afternoon and did not return. The police headquarters requested the collaboration of the local population to locate her, after this Wednesday morning they found the backpack of the young woman buried on the beach.
Valentina Cancela Sarmoria17, was last seen at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at stop seven on Playa Brava in Punta del Este, when she was going to meet her ex-boyfriend on the beach, with whom he had a turbulent relationship: he had denounced him in June for gender violence and had a restraining orderaccording to relatives told the Uruguayan newspaper Underlined.
The young woman was wearing a dark jacket and had a blue backpack that was found this Wednesday by local police.
Maldonado Police Chief, Erode Ruizin dialogue with the press, explained that the backpack was buried: “A well had to be dug and covered, it was buried at least 20 centimeters and there was movement of sand in the place”he declared.
Meanwhile, it was learned that the adolescent she had met her ex-boyfriend and entered the beach with him, according to the cameras of the Ministry of the Interior.
The ex-boyfriend was arrested and troops made an inspection at his home. Ruiz limited himself to saying at a press conference that “we can’t even talk to him because he’s younger”. However, the young man declared that he and Valentina chatted for a couple of hours in the place and then he left the beach alone.
The prosecutor’s office and the specialized judge will be in charge of maintaining communication with the young person.
Ruiz assured that the cameras of the Ministry of the Interior have registered “all the moves of the night” and that they were reconstructing the facts. Furthermore, he added that the search is carried out “50% on land and 50% at sea”, since, in case of homicide, the body may have been washed into the water.

Maldonado police deployed a intense search operation by land, air and sea to find the young woman. Specialized dogs and drones from the Republican Guard arrived at the place to advance the search for the young woman.
