While all Android phone manufacturers now have a model with a foldable screen, Samsung will soon unveil its Samsung Z Flip 5. The benchmark for clamshell screens intends to beat the competition.

For 5 years now, summer has heralded the sun and foldable novelties at Samsung. Between rumors and various and varied disclosures, it is not always easy to know the latest information regarding Samsung’s new shell. The South Korean manufacturer has skilfully distilled the novelties with more or less surprising technical specifications. The most anticipated would not be inside the phone, but outside…

When is the Samsung Z Flip 5 coming out?

To outdo Apple and its September announcements, Samsung has taken up the tradition of organizing a conference in early August, called Unpacked. This event is usually an opportunity to present its ultra high-end phones like the Galaxy Note and now foldables like the Z Flip.

But this year, the South Korean manufacturer seems to be blasting traditions. A page on the official Samsung website said “a conference at the end of July”. The web page was quickly taken down… Handling error or skilful guerrilla marketing maneuver, in any case, this incident corroborates several rumours. The Korean newspaper Chosun IIbo and other sources mentioned a Unpacked conference on July 26. The same Korean newspaper also indicates a release date for the Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 foldable smartphones on August 11, 2023.

On this occasion, Samsung should also lift the veil on its new Galaxy Tab S9 series tablets and the Galaxy Watch 6 connected watches.

How much does the Samsung Z Flip 5 cost?

Health and political crises have been the pretext to significantly increase the price of our smartphones. However, according to a tweet from Revegnus, the Z flip 5 should keep the same price as its predecessor, i.e. $999 for the entry-level version with 128 GB of storage space. We would therefore be around 1100 euros in France. With the arrival of new entrants in the foldable market such as Motorola and its Razr+, Samsung should reduce its margins to maintain its honorary place as “leader in foldable phone sales”.

Which screen for the Samsung Z Flip 5?

Little information has yet leaked, but the Samsung Z Flip 5 would have a larger screen than its predecessor. We are talking regarding a screen 6.7-inch AMOLED with a definition of 2640 x 1080 pixels… as already seen on the Z Flip 4.

The notable change would be on the outside, with a 3.4-inch external screen with a definition of 720 x 478 pixels (305 ppi), once morest 1.9 inches for a definition of 260 x 512 pixels (373 ppi) on the Z flip 4. Samsung almost doubles the display! A photo of the device confirms these impressive dimensions. It sported an original look, taking the form of a Windows folder.

In addition to the caller display, we can imagine new widgets specific to external screens such as message notifications. A report suggests that it would be able to display multiple applications.

Despite that large external screen, the Samsung Z Flip 5 would be IP68 certifiedi.e. watertightness up to 1m deep for 30 min.

What is the new design of the Samsung Z Flip 5?

According to several rumors, it seems that the Samsung Z Flip 5 has not revolutionized its design. Folded like a shell, the “small” Korean foldable smartphone should have a more square shape than a Z Flip 4. This enlargement is explained by the integration of a new, larger exterior screen, with a kind of recess, like a Windows folder icon. With this large exterior screen, the layout of the camera modules has been reworked.

The most notable change around the Samsung Z Flip 5 can be seen, not from the front, but from the side. The latest offspring of the Flip family benefits from a new hinge. Compared to Oppo’s Find N2s, the Z Flip 4 had a visible hinge. On this Samsung Z Flip 5, it should be almost imperceptible with a teardrop design to “eliminate the crease on the screen”. In other words, there would no longer be any space between the two parts when the screen is folded back on itself.

How does the Samsung Z Flip 5 perform?

It’s still too early to know the benchmarks and more generally the power of the Z Flip 5. However, Samsung does not seem to have sought innovation with a new in-house or foundry chip. According to the first elements to our knowledge, the Korean would have kept a well-known SoC: that of the Galaxy S23. So, like the S-series figurehead, the Z Flip 5 would ship a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 from Quallcom. As with the Z Fold 5, the manufacturer would skip a more powerful SoC like the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2.

As often with Samsung, it would not be the classic version, but a tailor-made version with always 8 GB on the entry level. We can expect better performance than the Galaxy S23 because Samsung has further improved the code of Android and its One UI interface.

What is the battery life of the Samsung Z Flip 5?

The specifications have not yet filtered, but, in all likelihood, the autonomy should be very close to a Galaxy S23 and its 3900 mAh battery. Indeed, if the capacity of the battery remains unchanged compared to the previous generation, the power consumption should be more measured.

As on the Z Flip 4, a 3700mAh battery should give energy to the two touchscreens of the Z Flip 5. Thanks to software improvements from Samsung, the two phones would display an equivalent autonomy despite the much larger external screen. As indicated just before, the South Korean juggernaut would rely on a second generation Snapdragon 8, offering a good power/power consumption compromise.

In terms of charging, the Samsung Z Flip 5 should not bring any change compared to its ancestor from a year ago. Always a limit of 25W fast charging, wired with a charger not included in the box. This is very little when you look at the competition, especially Chinese. The Korean manufacturer does not make much effort to offer 60W or 100W charging on its flagship models. The Samsung Z Flip 5 is once once more very close to a Galaxy S23.

Is the Samsung Z Flip 5 good in photos?

The narrowness of the form factor of smartphones with foldable screens prevents the integration of large sensors. It will therefore be necessary to be satisfied with two modest 12 million pixel sensors on the back and a 10 million pixel “selfie” sensor. That’s dim compared to the 100 million pixels and even more found on other smartphones. Samsung would thus keep the same definition as the previous generation for the rear sensors as before.

However, with an identical SoC to the Galaxy S23”, we can expect better image processing. Beyond artificial intelligence to identify scenes, the chip should achieve better digital zoom with smoother pixel smoothing.

Samsung Z Flip 5: which version of Android and One UI?

According to our information, the Samsung Z Flip 5 should run with Android 13 Tiramisu. The Korean giant’s flip phone would work with its One UI 5.1.1 software overlay.

What colors for the Samsung Z Flip 5?

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 sported four colorful dresses, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will also feature four. On the one hand, two shades already existing on the Z Flip 4: graphite (black) and lavender (light purple). On the other hand, two new colors: crème (white) and mint (vert).
