It is by simple press release that the Nippon Sony presented in more detail its new PlayStation. Good news ? It is coming to market this year. A rather discreet announcement given that the largest exhibition in Europe dedicated to video games is currently taking place in Cologne, Gamescom. Admission of a flop to come?
News : following a formalization in May, Sony delivers more details on its new console, the PlayStation Portal.
Although portable, the latter is not positioned in line with the PSP since it is above all a remote reader.
The detail : the PlayStation Portal comes down to an 8-inch screen (LCD, Full HD, 60 fps) embedded in a controller. Nothing to revolutionize the game.
This product is positioned above all as a game accessory allowing you to play (almost) anywhere, provided you have a good wifi connection and a PlayStation 5 nearby.
“PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers who need to share their living room TV or just want to play PS5 games in another room of the house”
assure Sony, in his press release.
There is indeed no question of playing your favorite games in the car or on public transport as you can do with the Nintendo Switch. The console just streams the PlayStation 5 display in real time.
To note : Sony is talking regarding a launch later this year, sometime around the holiday season, priced at $199.99, or around €220.
A disappointing offer
Sony’s proposal is enough to leave players skeptical. What is the interest of such an accessory (which is not strictly speaking a console)? It’s hard to imagine that the example put forward by the Japanese giant might convince consumers to pay €220 – in addition to the price of the PS5 – to have the opportunity to play from… their toilets. Unless.
It is not even a question of taking advantage of Remote Play, which allows you to navigate through the menus of the PlayStation from a smartphone or PC, in addition to launching downloads or games, or cloud gaming thanks to PlayStation Plus. As for watching films and series, it will be possible, but only in streaming via wifi. One would have thought that the console might serve as a second screen and display, for example, the map of a video game launched on the television, but once more, this is not the case.
Can we keep hope for the better?
All the details of the console are not yet known, which allows to keep hope for a possible software update of the device. We can indeed hope that several features will be added to the console, so that it becomes more useful. Without this, the path to a flop seems clear for the PlayStation Portal.
