The relatives of the victims of the shipwreck of the Galician fishing boat in Canada have requested to be thoroughly investigated why the sailors were working at the time of the tragedy despite the storm that was in the area.
Speaking to the media in Vigo, Pablo More, brother of the Peruvian Daniel More and uncle of Diego Andrés More and Edwin Andrés Salinas (all of them sailors from the ‘Villa de Pitanxo’), claimed the need to investigate the causes from what has occured.
“The question I ask myself is how is it possible that this skipper has been working with that storm, when there are boats that are waiting for the weather to subside to be able to work. Always, always with this. And it has had to happen”, has regretted, following pointing to the skipper of the ship that, according to him, it was not the first time that he decided to continue operating despite the weather conditions.
Thus, he insisted that what the family wants is that “it be thoroughly investigated”. “If there is any responsibility, let him assume it personally,” added More. In addition, he has explained that hours before what happened his brother told him that the weather was “very bad” but that they had to work. “You already know what this pattern is like. I already told you what it’s like, ‘my brother told me,” he stressed.
“Why did they have to work with such a storm. That’s not fair. He always does it like this. It’s not the first time. So many families in mourning and we know how he is. That’s why I want things to be cleared up. If there is responsibility, let him assume it”, one of the survivors has sentenced, in relation to the boss.
As explained, the shipowner has confirmed that lifeless bodies have appeared of Daniel More and Diego Andrés More, while at the moment nothing is known of Edwin Andrés Salinas.
“We’re Broken”
For her part, Daniel More’s wife has shown his pain. “We are devastated. We still haven’t assimilated what we are experiencing. There are no words. We have two children, 18 and 9 years old. They are also devastated. They are very bad,” she lamented.
Her husband had been dedicated to fishing for 15 years, since he emigrated from Peru to Spain and on several occasions he had been in Canada working for various companies. “This time he left and never came back“, He indicated visibly excited.
Along the same lines, Marluz Esquivel, wife of Edwin Andrés Salinas, has spoken, explaining that it was “a very hard job” for her husband. Both had four children together, the last of only six months.
“It is not known how the accident happened. At the moment we know nothing,” lamented the woman, who has only been informed that her husband is on the list of missing persons. The last time she spoke to him was hours before the accident. In that conversation he told her that the weather was bad but that they still had to work. Edwin had been working at sea since the end of 2020.
On the other hand, it has been confirmed that representatives of the Peruvian Consulate in Spain will travel to Galicia to be with the family. In addition, families were informed that “they would do everything possible” to bring relatives who are in Peru to Spain.
“The ship moved a lot”
Kevin González, son of Fernández González, a sailor who disappeared in the tragedy, has also asked that what happened be investigated, “not out of revenge” but so that “it doesn’t happen once more”.
“We think he was on duty, he was working at the time, on the machine,” said his son, who explained that the last news they had of him was the messages sent to his partner (from the father), in which he moved ” that they were working” and that the weather was “very, very bad” and that the “ship moved a lot.
At the age of 53, it was his first tide in Terranova. The previous one was in Malvinas, with the same company. “I know the structure of the ship, I know where he worked, deep down, working is very difficult to leave if it was due to a sea surge,” lamented his son, who has asked that “the situation be clarified”: “Not because me, for the rest of my family and for having a reason, not for revenge, but so that it doesn’t happen once more”.
Fernando González’s son knows that the sea “is a very big risk”, but has maintained that “measures must be increased, all precautions must be taken”. In addition, he has asked that the search device “try until it can’t be done anymore”.

Kevin González maintains that in “those conditions” in which the sea was, the boat “should seek shelter or not be in a fishing situation.” “If she’s fishing, having to tack, or lifting tackle, it’s more destabilizing,” he has noted.
Fernando González was a director of the Sociedade Deportiva Tirán and a rower, as was Kevin, who is also a coach for the little ones. “When he was on the ground, he would always lend a hand,” he has noted.
