Relatives of Ecuadorian drug trafficker “Fito” Macías are intercepted in Argentina and expelled to Ecuador

BUENOS AIRES (AP) — The wife and children of Adolfo “Fito” Macías Villamar, the dangerous drug lord who is in the crosshairs of the Ecuadorian authorities, were expelled on Friday to their country following being found in the province Argentina from Córdoba.

The wife of the leader of the criminal gang Los Choneros and their three children were taken on a flight to Guayaquil following being intercepted in a private neighborhood near the city of Córdoba, in central Argentina, an official told The Associated Press. Ministry of Security who did not identify himself because he was not authorized to speak officially on the matter.

The reasons for his expulsion from Argentine soil have not yet been specified by the authorities. Security Minister Patricia Bullrich plans to hold a press conference throughout the day to provide more details.

The names of Macías’ relatives were not confirmed by the Ministry spokesperson, but the media have identified them as Inda Mariela Peñarrieta Tuárez, 48 years old and wife of “Fito”; Michelle Macías Peñarrieta, 21; Ilse María Macías Peñarrieta, 12, and Lian Sejam Macías Peñarrieta, 4.

The leader of Los Choneros escaped from Guayaquil prison a few weeks ago and following his escape an escalation of violence began in Ecuador, which is in “internal armed conflict,” according to the government decreed. The drug lord is credited with ties to the Mexican Sinaloa cartel.

Local media outlets indicated that several other associates of the drug lord were also among the group that left Argentina.
