After an unsuccessful attempt to integrate into the Brics group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, until January 1, 2024), Algeria reiterated, at the end of the month august, its desire to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

A redeployment which is part of what the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, describes as a “strategic vision” orchestrated by Head of State, Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Because according to the latter, a “center of gravity was formed in Central Asia”. And Algeria intends to be able to take part in it.

For Algerian officials, this orientation it is would not be so much a reaction to the rejection of the country’s candidacy for BRICS as a confirmation of its strategic aspirations. And this, even if, anticipating the non-selection of his country, President Tebboune had not made the trip to Johannesburg, where the last summit of the organization was held. Some see this as a clear sign of resentment towards ses members.
