Poppmeier has to withdraw due to illness.
There is a surprising change in leadership at the Spar grocery store chain. On Tuesday, the Supervisory Board appointed Hans K. Reisch as the new CEO with immediate effect. This step became necessary due to the illness of the previous CEO Fritz Poppmeier. He was appointed to head Spar at the beginning of 2021.
“The entire Spar family really regrets Fritz Poppmeier’s departure from the board due to illness,” said Supervisory Board Chairman Gerhard Drexel. He thanked Poppmeier for his years of commitment and “dedication to our company.” He hoped that Poppmeier would continue to recover well. Spar did not provide any information regarding the type or severity of the illness.
Reisch, a grandson of one of the Spar founders, has been a member of the trading group’s board of directors since 2001, he has been deputy chairman of the board since 2021 and has represented Poppmeier for a year, as Spar also announced. The board now consists of four people. Reisch forms Spar’s management team with his previous board colleagues Marcus Wild, Markus Kaser and Paul Klotz.
