Because he was said to have turned back 65 meters before the summit, Reinhold Messner was deprived of one of his records. Nevertheless, he remains a legend – and he expresses himself accordingly calmly.

The Guinness Book of Records now imposes tougher conditions on mountain climbers.
Only those who have climbed to the top of a mountain can claim records.
This means that mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner will lose his status as a man who has climbed all of the 8,000-meter peaks in the world.
Mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner has climbed the 14 eight-thousanders in the world – but only actually. Because he was only almost at the summit of Annapurna: he and his companion Hans Kammerlander turned back 65 meters before the highest point of the mountain. Now Messner has been stripped of his success by the Guinness Book of Records for exactly that reason. Messner now spoke in English via Instagram – and didn’t skimp on philosophical explanations about alpine sports:
«This is the final statement on records in alpinism! There is none! And there will never be any in traditional alpinism! I respect every alpinist who has experiences on the great walls of this world. That’s what life is about. I remain the conqueror of the useless, but I have achieved so much in life that today I can say: I am a happy man.”
Messner still counts other records
Messner takes it rather lightly, knowing full well that his status as a mountaineering legend cannot be taken away from him despite this change. The South Tyrolean is considered one of the most famous mountaineers in the world. Together with Peter Habeler, he was the first person in the world to climb Mount Everest (8,848 meters) without the aid of oxygen. He was also the first to climb Nanga Parbat (8,125 meters) single-handedly in 1978.
The trigger for the revocation of the record was a reassessment of the Guinness Book of Records for the 2024 edition of climbing the highest mountains. So must for them Climbing an eight-thousander the “true summit”, i.e. the highest point, must be climbed. This can be done on foot and proven. According to the latest research, Messner and Hans Kammerlander turned back 65 meters before the actual summit of Annapurna. This means they have only climbed 13 of the 14 eight-thousanders.
