”The situation at Mons prison is difficult for prison officers. The latter have long suffered the combined consequences of the state of buildings, prison overcrowding and lack of staff, without seeing their situation improve.”, had once once more pleaded Éric Thiébaut (PS), deputy mayor of Hensies.

The latter did not hesitate to point out that in recent weeks, several agents had been sent to hospital following violent attacks and that without an official reaction, the only solution had been a strike. The minister specified that the detainees responsible for these recent attacks had been transferred “in order to restore calm within the Mons annex”.

The strike by prison officers at Mons prison is also impacting the city: “Our police officers are not on the ground, they are taking over”

For the rest, he announces that “nine external people are due to enter service soon. The entry into service date is already known for six of them. There are still four vacant positions and three are occupied by contract workers. For the four vacant positions, we will call upon a recruitment reserve. During this first term of 2024, it is planned to relaunch a selection procedure for prison officers for all of Wallonia. This procedure aims both to be able to recruit externals to fill the last vacant places in the framework and to give status to contract workers currently in service.”

He further specifies that level of administrative functions, 4 people must soon enter service. Once effective entry into office, the framework will be complete. In terms of psychiatric nursing functions, a modification of the framework is underway.” The minister pledged to visit Mons prison as soon as possible, as his predecessor had done before him.

For the rest, it should be noted that the new construction project has not progressed in recent months. Building management is in fact always “looking for land for the future prison.”
