Reimbursement for Adapted Physical Activity for Cancer Patients: A Two-Year Experiment by the ARS

The government wants to experiment with reimbursement for adapted physical activity for cancer patients. Since 2017, doctors have been able to prescribe sport, but until now the practice was not covered by social security. A two-year experiment entrusted to the ARS opens up this possibility.

“And one, and two, and three… “Twice a week, in the premises of the League once morest cancer in Rennes, Alexandre Corbel, a teacher of adapted physical activity, makes his patients work.
They come for 10 sessions, “in small groups of 6, for the most individualized support possible, there are more or less complicated courses“, specifies Alexandre Corbel.

“We don’t do sport like we see in the gyms, we do exercise. In essence, the appropriate activity is adapted. Each person will work according to their abilities and their pathology. The lady who has breast cancer and the man who has prostate cancer will do different movements. Sometimes it’s muscle strengthening, stretching, balance work… the goal is for them to get better.”

Since a decree of December 30, 2016, doctors can make prescriptions to prescribe sport. But the activity is not covered by Social Security. This might become the case for cancer patients.

It seems essentialsays Alexandre Corbel. LPhysical activities are a therapeutic asset in their own right. Scientific studies show it. Activity plays a positive role in the lives of patients affected by the disease. It helps prevent overweight and obesity, known risk factors that can increase the risk of recurrence. The activity modulates the production of certain hormones which can be involved in the growth of a tumor. It also stimulates the immune system and therefore the fight once morest cancer cells. “

Thus, in people suffering from cancer, sport reduces the risk of recurrence by 20 to 40% depending on the cancer.

In its own way, physical activity heals the body and the mind. note Alexandre Corbel and Claire Moubèche, head of the support service for sick people at the Ille-et-Vilaine Cancer League. During the sessions, they see people transform. “At first, testifies Alexandre Corbel, they arrive rolled up, shoulders tucked in and little by little, they regain their abilities, they stand up, reclaim their bodies and regain self-confidence.”

Sport allows you to be active during illness, confirms Claire Moubèche. This helps patients regain self-confidence and build social bonds. Because during a Nordic walking session (the Ille-et-Vilaine Cancer League organizes them every week) people talk to each other, discussing daily life. They have the same story and understand each other. It is real support during and following illness. “

When the measure was announced, Sophie Cha, medical advisor to Drajes, (Regional Academic Delegation for Youth Engagement and Sport) did not hide her disappointment. We expected much more”.

There have been around twenty experiments in France on diabetes and heart problems. In Brittany, for example, we had an Ace of Hearts project to do adapted sports with people who had had a heart attack, and all these projects end there.

The fight once morest a sedentary lifestyle is a major national causeshe recalls and we have an overabundant literature which repeats over and over once more that adapted sport is effective forur all pathologies, cardiovascular diseases, but also mental illnesses, depression, anxiety. Adapted sport is a non-medicinal therapeutic practice, accessible to everyone but we will only reimburse it for certain patients.she regrets.

The hardest part is the first step

It’s not regarding financing everyone’s sporting activities, but we know that the most difficult thing is the first step. To work, there must be people who supervise and motivate.”

“One euro invested in the field of adapted sporting activity would save 1 euro 7 later. We must invest now to see the effects in a few years concludes the doctor. But unfortunately, not everyone will have access to reimbursed adapted sport. “
