In addition to controlling the disease through drugs, ex-mentally ill people have a healthy lifestyle that can also help them reduce the incidence of the disease. Some recovered patients return to community life following being discharged from the hospital. Their self-care ability is weakened, and they cannot handle three meals a day independently. They mainly rely on takeaway fast food. It is difficult to ensure a balanced and nutritious diet, which also causes other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and high blood pressure. . They are generally less motivated to exercise and seldom participate in social activities, thus reducing their quality of life and hindering the recovery process.
Lifestyle and mental health are closely related and affect each other. According to the health information of the Department of Health, a healthy lifestyle refers to practicing good health habits and quitting bad habits that affect health. Healthy eating and regular exercise are two components of a healthy lifestyle. People who recover from mental illness can improve their overall health by eating well, having regular bowel movements, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking and alcohol. This will help to enhance the sense of devotion to life, effectively prevent and treat chronic diseases, and improve the quality of life.
Encouraging ex-mentally ill persons to regularly participate in recreational and social activities has a positive effect on mental health and helps stabilize their mental status. Take Sister Ping (pseudonym) as an example. Encouraged by the Mental Health Comprehensive Community Center, she tried to participate in different social activities of the center, such as coffee latte art class, towel exercise class, etc. Participating in recreational and social activities has enabled her to broaden her social circle, meet more like-minded friends, and share happiness and worries with others. From being silent and introverted with low self-confidence, she now smiles more and more, increasing her acceptance of new things. She bluntly said that life is happier than before, and the quality of sleep at night has also improved.
A healthy lifestyle has a positive impact on those who have recovered from mental illness. It is hoped that every recovered mental patient can develop healthy living habits and live a wonderful and healthy life.
