The Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced new rules that would allow Vice President Kamala Harris to become an official presidential candidate before August 7 if, as expected, no other challengers come forward.

According to reports, this will allow delegates to virtually vote on the presidential nomination between August 1 and 7, meaning that the National Party Convention will have a purely ceremonial role.
The calendar would only be slightly affected if another candidate for the nomination is presented before Saturday, something highly unlikely after less than 36 hours since US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he was not running for re-election, Harris secured massive support from party barons and convention delegates.
“As a party, our obligation is to implement a fair nomination process that expresses preferences through voting,” DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison said in a statement.
In that short time, Harris ran, took the reins of the Biden-Harris campaign to transform it into “Harris for President,” and won the support of the party’s top leaders and the commitment of a sufficient majority of delegates to vote for her.
The announcement of who will be Harris’ vice president must be made in the next two weeks to complete the voting and confirmation process of the nomination.
