The Minister-President of the Brussels region was the guest of Martin Buxant on bel RTL this Tuesday, November 21. He notably addressed the issue of Airbnb accommodation in the capital.
Rudi Vervoort was Martin Buxant’s guest on Matinale on bel RTL. The Minister-President of the Brussels region notably mentioned the situation of Airbnb accommodation in the capital. A draft ordinance was approved on third reading by the Brussels government at the end of September. The regional executive thus assures that it wants to regulate non-hotel tourist accommodation in the capital.
So I wanted to come back with you to a new rule, it’s called an ordinance in the Brussels region, which will come into force to regulate the rush towards Airbnb accommodation and “wild” tourist accommodation. Are there more and more of them in Brussels?
“It’s a phenomenon that we encounter in all cities and which mainly has the effect of driving out residents from historic centers. Why? Because the relationship with money makes it more profitable to rent via Airbnb than through a classic rental.”
So this will be more and more controlled? By who ?
“What we are aiming for is first of all to protect housing, it is legitimate, we must have residents including in the city center. There are centers which are dead. Residents must also be able to live in acceptable conditions since often when you have Airbnbs in buildings it’s a permanent party.”
So, are there any nuisances?
“Yes, there are nuisances. And then, for tourists too, there are security issues. These accommodations must meet certain security standards.”
Is it unfair competition also for the hotel sector Rudi Vervoort all these Airbnbs which are developing?
“You have to ask the hotel sector and they will tell you yes. However, we should not completely reject collaborative rental, since that is what we are also talking regarding, like Uber and others. We must be able to find a fair balance and above all preserve the habitat.”
