Following our article entitled “These residents suffocated by the smell of wastewater”, published on July 23, the City of Marseille proceeded to clear up doubts regarding the wastewater treatment plant on Boulevard de la Pugette ( 9th). “We were not alerted by the localsspecifies Christine Juste (EELV), assistant to the environment. However, this problem will be accentuated with the absence of rainfall, the pipes which are not rinsed and the high temperatures. Emanations of H2S gas will be more frequent, which raises the question of olfactory nuisances and a potential health risk. This week, we therefore called in the Battalion of Marine Firefighters, which carried out surveys on several sites: in front of the Pugette station and the nursery school, in the entrances to residences and the common areas of Square Michelet. From several processes and techniques, firefighters found no analysis above WHO standards (20 ppb). Already, we are reassured, there is no danger to the health of citizens.

Christine Juste also indicates that she is working with Atmosud (the air quality observatory in Paca) and Seramm (Marseille Métropole sanitation service) to draw up a map of “points noirs” in order to solve these persistent odor nuisances.

Near the Velodrome, residents can no longer open their windows or stay in their garden. The last episode”stifling” goes back to July 7. Three days later, Seramm carried out a diagnosis and a washing of the networks in the sector.
