Regime change in Russia is not “NATO’s goal”, despite the invasion of Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday. That is also not the intention of US President Joe Biden, Scholz added.
“I had the opportunity to talk to him at length at the White House and we also discussed these issues,” said the Chancellor on the German public channel ARD.
Joe Biden said on Saturday in Warsaw that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin should “not stay in power”. The White House had, in the process, assured that Mr. Biden had not called for a “regime change”.
“Considerable successes”
“Democracy, freedom and law have a future everywhere, but I bet it’s the deep desire we have as human beings to live in a democracy,” Scholz explained.
“But it is up to peoples and nations to fight for this freedom,” he added. “What we must guarantee is that there is no violation of the integrity and sovereignty of States,” argued Mr. Scholz.
Asked regarding the arms deliveries by Germany, deemed insufficient by kyiv, the German Chancellor replied: “We are doing everything in our power”. The weapons already delivered by the West have, according to him, allowed “considerable successes”.
