Regenerative Medicine: Slowing Down the Aging Process and Preventing Chronic Diseases – Insights from Dr. Lina Triana

2023-08-06 02:41:56

Dr. Lina Triana, a plastic surgeon and specialist in medicine for age management, warns: we begin to age from the age of 27.

It is at this time when the levels of hormones in the body begin to drop, while there are two hormones, on the contrary, that increase exponentially over time: cortisol and insulin. And both are related to aging and the state of health in general.

Cortisol increases even more especially when we suffer from stress. Insulin increases when you have a diet rich in carbohydrates and sugars. And with cortisol and insulin shot up, the body becomes inflamed. If that becomes chronic, not only do we age faster, but the diseases associated with old age are activated: diabetes, arthritis, hypertension and many others.

That is why doctors insist: leading a healthy life, eating well, exercising regularly, sleeping the right hours, being coherent between what we think and what we do to avoid stress, is a way not only to have good health, but also to not to grow old in a hurry.

In Colombia, life expectancy is 74 years, according to Dane. Women live 6.8 years longer compared to men.

Spain takes us a decade. Life expectancy there is 84 years. But in Madrid or Cali the same thing will happen: when we look in the mirror at the end of life we will have wrinkles, spots, sagging.

Now it is possible to do treatments so that when wrinkles arrive, they are less evident. | Photo: The Country

What science is trying now is, then, in addition to rejuvenating by means of plastic surgery the parts of the body that have already aged, treating the skin before it becomes wrinkled and stained and sagging. In this way it is intended to slow down the aging process, or when it happens, it is less evident. This is called regenerative medicine.

One of the discoveries, where part of the secret of ‘eternal youth’ would be, is the telomeres. To explain it simply, says Dr. Lina Triana, they are like circuits that unite the chromosomes where our genetic information is stored.

As the cell division process occurs, the telomeres shrink little by little and, over time, the years, it is not possible for them to reproduce. A kind of programmed death that is related to aging. It is in fact ensured that the telomeres are our biological clock. If they are managed to regenerate through different interventions, it is possible to delay, in part, wrinkles and everything else.

One of the alternatives to which plastic surgeons are appealing are regenerative therapies, using platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

It consists of preparing the blood of each patient, separating the red blood cells and plasma, and obtaining the platelets. In them there are proteins that are responsible for regenerating tissues, stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, so that, in the areas where it is applied, it seeks to achieve a smoother, firmer and more luminous skin.

“Platelet-rich plasma treatments are key pillars in current regenerative medicine. More studies are still needed to ensure the replicability of the results and the limitations”, wrote Dr. Triana in an article published in the book ‘Plastic and Aesthetic Regenerative Surgery and fat Grafting’, where she describes another treatment to look young despite the passage inevitable of time: use stem cells derived from the patient’s adipose tissue.

“Stem cells are obtained from fat and used for real regenerative processes in irradiated tissues and chronic wounds that produce more than just filling, true healing; adipose tissue is composed of adipocytes plus collagen fibers and stromal cells, neurovascular structures, and adipose-derived stem cells: ACSC. 85% of this fatty tissue is subcutaneous and only 15% is visceral, which is why we can say that our subcutaneous tissue is our largest reserve of stem cells, thus what was previously a source of unwanted tissue, fat accumulation. , now it is a source of regenerative medicine”.

In another of the sections of her article, Dr. Triana clarifies: “Many times these regenerative medicine therapies for aesthetic uses are homologated to homeopathic treatments, and even in the field of aesthetic medicine, many treatments are being offered without sufficient evidence. peer-reviewed scientific With marketing penetrating medical offices and the growing power of social media, these therapies soon become a standard for anti-aging treatments that patients seek out and physicians provide. There is still a need to better understand what is called regenerative medicine today, but we can see, often as anecdotal findings, how it can really impact skin quality by playing an active role in the aging process.” That is to say: the first evidence indicates that it does work, but more research is still required.

Celebrities are turning to regenerative medicine and other possibilities to age more slowly. One of them is Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese soccer player who, despite the fact that he is just short of reaching 40, still maintains a physical condition that allows him to compete in soccer with 18-year-olds.

‘CR7′ not only eats well, sleeps well, trains well. He also goes to the operating room. To define his abs, ultrasound liposculpture was performed.

In addition, he undergoes hyperbaric chamber treatments which, among many uses in sport, are being used successfully to halt the aging process of the skin. The theory is that hyperbaric oxygen allows the circulatory system to reactivate, revitalizing tissues and reducing wrinkles.

The actress Jennifer Aniston says that in her case, to stop the passage of time on her skin (53 years old) a device called Nuface has worked for her. It is a device that serves to tone the facial skin through micro currents. Biocellulose masks are also applied, an ingredient that is produced from bacteria with moisturizing and antioxidant properties that protect the skin.

Dr. Alfonso Riascos certainly recalls that a substance that is still very fashionable, botox, used above all to erase wrinkles between the eyebrows, has a problem: its effect lasts between three and five months, so it must be applied over and over once more. time.

— And it does not slow down aging, even if the marketing says otherwise.

There is another very famous treatment already, called Morpheus. It is a device that treats the accumulation of fat on the skin. In theory it rejuvenates it and stimulates the production of collagen. In addition to wrinkles, it erases cellulite and stretch marks.

However, what is still used the most is facial rejuvenation surgery, which has advanced to the point that it no longer leaves visible scars. Dr. Alfonso Riascos actually patented a facial surgery technique that he called that: Zero Scar.

— It is a procedure that has evolved a lot. Before it was a surgery that consisted of stretching the skin. The patients were as if they were on a motorcycle at 150 km per hour. It was also an operation that left scars on the forehead and other areas. All this was improved and not only the scars were reduced, but the objectives were changed. Now it’s not just stretching the skin. It is to do an internal treatment in the muscles, tissues, fat, reposition what has fallen and by doing that a much more consistent facial rejuvenation is achieved that does not depend only on stretching the skin, but on putting everything back in its proper place. place so that when the skin is repositioned, it does not need to be tempered.

By the way, Dr. Riascos offers some very practical advice so as not to look old so quickly: do not gain weight or lose weight drastically, because that causes too much skin to appear and flaccidity appears.

He also does not recommend being excessively thin at 60, because the skin sags. As always, excesses are bad: “not too fat, not too skinny”.

He also recommends finding out regarding treatments that are fashionable and that don’t really work, or whose effects are very temporary.

— There is a treatment called ‘Russian threads’. They put facial tension threads on the patient, to stretch the skin inside. The problem is that people who put the threads on remain swollen for two or three months due to the procedure that was done under the skin and of course, the swelling makes the skin look warmer, but between three and five months it is as if they would not have done anything to them.

In the search for eternal youth there is still much to discover. What the specialists agree on is that it is not necessary to look for it ahead of time, because it is becoming common for young people of 18, 20, to go to the offices of plastic surgeons when they do not need it.
