More than 30 refugees apparently drowned while traveling from Morocco to the Canary Islands in a rubber dinghy. The non-governmental organizations Walking Borders and Alarm Phone said on Wednesday that there were originally 59 people on the boat. The NGOs gave different figures for the number of victims. While Walking Borders spoke of 39 dead, Alarm Phone said 35 were missing. Neither the Spanish Coast Guard nor the Moroccan authorities wanted to confirm the number of people on the boat or the number of missing people. Sources from the Spanish Coast Guard said that regarding 88 miles south-east of Gran Canaria, 24 people had been rescued by the Moroccan sea rescue service. According to Walking Borders, people on board the boat had been begging for rescue for more than 12 hours beforehand. The survivors were taken to Cape Bojador on the north-west coast of Africa.
